Presbyterian Church not only offers eleven classes for adults, but children's
programs
beginning with a class for children as young as six months! A brief description of the
make-up of each class, as well as curriculum are provided to assist in finding the Sunday
School Class that is right for each person and family. For more information, call

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

About The Curriculum...

The Present Word
|
- Teachers and learners come together to reflect on
the Biblical text
and act on what they discover.
|
- Sessions feature the celebrations of the Christian
church, which reflect
the life of Christ and bring to believers the significant events of that life.

|
ALICE
BROWN CLASS
|
Each class begins with music and devotions.
Class is named in honor of a long-time faithful servant of First Presbyterian Church.
Membership includes couples and singles generally 40 years old and older.
The course of study is traditional, in-depth Bible study on a subject selected and led by
the class.
Class meets in the Alice Brown classroom, located on the first floor of the
educational/office
building.

COVENANT CLASS
|
Young Adult Fellowship Class whose membership includes
couples and singles generally ranging in
age from 20 to 40 years old.
Class uses various topical studies and book studies.
Class meets under the sanctuary in the "Juice" room
|
|
CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR CLASS
|
Members sit in a circle and often discuss issues from their
lesson and enjoy singing as part of
their time together.
Teachers rotate each Sunday, using The Present Word uniform
lesson.
Membership includes couples and singles generally 40 years old and older.
Class meets in the Bridal Room located on the first floor of the educational/office
building.

DISCOVERY CLASS
|
For those who enjoy a discussion format in a small group
atmosphere.
Studies are of various topics and units of interest, books of the Bible and video series.
Membership includes couples and singles generally 30 years old and older.
Class meets in Room 202 located on the second floor of the educational/office
building.

|
HERITAGE CLASS
|
Uses various topical studies, book series in a mostly
lecture format in a casual atmosphere.
Membership includes couples and singles generally 40 years old and older.
Class meets in Room 216 located on the second floor of the educational/office building.

|
LYDE TOWNSEND CLASS
|
Named in honor of it's long-time teacher and leader.
Membership is made up of older women.
Teachers rotate each Sunday, using The Present Word uniform
lesson.
Class meets in Room 212 located on the second floor of the educational/office building.

MEN'S BIBLE CLASS
|
Membership is made up of men of all ages.
Class meets in the Gallant Chapel located on the first floor of the educational/office
building.
Members sing hymns at the beginning of each class.
Teachers rotate each Sunday, using The Present Word uniform
lesson.

SEEKERS CLASS
|
Membership includes couples and singles, generally comprised of those with grown
children.
Class meets in the parlor located on the first floor of the educational/office building
Studies are Biblical and topical.

ORIENTATION CLASS
|
Meets twice a year: Four weeks in May
Four weeks in November
Meets in the Session Room located on the second floor of the educational/office building.
Designed for new church members, or members seeking more insight into First Presbyterian
Church and PCUSA.

|
PHILATHEA CLASS
|
The oldest Sunday School class at First Presbyterian Church.
Membership is made up of women of varying ages.
Meets in a classroom near the Session Room located on the second floor of the
educational/office building.
Members rotate teaching each Sunday, using The Present Word
uniform lesson and Biblical studies.

Young Adults
|
Members are from approximately 22 to 30 years in age.
Fellowship is an important part of this class.
The class uses various topical Bible studies and learning about the
Presbyterian Faith via videos and media based materials.
Meets in the 3rd Floor Attic "Heaven".

|
CHILDREN/YOUTH SUNDAY
SCHOOL CLASSES

|
ROOM LOCATIONS
|
All 100 level room numbers are located on the first floor of
the educational/office building. All 200
level room numbers are located on the second floor of the educational/office building.

About The Curriculum...
|
Bible Quest
|
- The Bible story curriculum used in most of our
children and youth classes.
|
- Used as the foundation for our New
Bible Adventures! model.
|
- Invites students to make the stories become a part
of their daily living.
|
- Each session leads all learners to encounter the
overall story of the Bible, interpret the story, connect
the story with their own experiences and live in the world as disciples of Christ.
|
|
EARLY CHRISTIAN AWARENESS CLASS
-- SIX MONTHS TO TWO YEARS OLD --
|
Uses repetition, fast moving songs and stories to teach
about the creation story and God's love.
|
Children will feel a love for their creator and know of
God's love for them and all living creatures.
|
Children are picked up in the nursery by the teacher, taken
to their class and returned to the nursery
to be picked by parents.
|
|
TWO YEAR OLD CLASS
|
Through repetition, songs, rhythms and Bible stories, the
children learn about Jesus' love for them. This
class meets in Room 100.
|
|
THREE YEAR OLD CLASS
|
Children use Bible stories, crafts, songs, movement and
prayer each week as they explore what it means to
be a part of God's creation. Class meets in Room 102.
|
|
FOUR YEAR OLD & KINDERGARTEN CLASSES
|
Come encounter the love of God and learn about the
life of Jesus. Music, the arts and storytelling
enable children to learn in many ways. The four year old class meets in Room 104. The
kindergarten class meets in Room 103.
|
|
FIRST GRADE CLASS
|
Gather around and listen, sing, read and create! Children
will learn the foundational stories of God's creation and the life of Christ. This class
meets in Room 200.
|
|
New Bible Adventures! BELOW
|
|
SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH & FIFTH GRADE CLASSES
|
These classes meet outside the choir room, located at the
top of the stairwell on the second floor of the educational/office building. Focuses on a
single Biblical story for several weeks. The elementary classrooms are redesigned into
creative workshops, including clay, paint, cooking, building, sewing and others that teach
Bible stories. Workshops include:
|
- Thou-Art - an art-based learning center.
|
- Thee-Alter - skits, dramas and puppets are
the avenue of learning.
|
- Media Room - movies, videos and music present the story in a
visually stimulating way.
|
- Computer Lab - research, games and computer
software challenges the student to learn more about the scripture story.
|
- Temple - Bible games, mazes and writing
projects will emphasize the story content.
|
- Classes rotate to new workshops each week for four or five
weeks.
|
|
SIXTH, SEVENTH & EIGHTH GRADE CLASS
|
This class meets on the third floor attic, "Heaven".
Youth focus on Biblical foundations for life. Games, puzzles and small group discussions
are included.
|
|
SENIOR HIGH CLASS
|
This class meets in the McDougald Room, located in the
Family Life Center at the lower end of the parking lot. Class uses Bible, topical studies
and current events as a springboard for discussion.
|
|
|
OTHER STUDY
OPPORTUNITIES
|
|
Small Group (5-10 women) Bible Study
Opportunities are offered by First Presbyterian
Church to women with like schedule and study needs. Currently there are nine groups
meeting during the week at various times and locations. Most of the groups are full. New
groups will begin as interest warrants.
|
Wednesday Morning Bible Study.
Men and women meet at 10:00 am on
Wednesdays in the Bridal Room. Studies
progress through the chapters of the Bible.
|
Men's Prayer Breakfast and
Bible Study. Every Friday morning at 6:30 am, men gather in the Family
Life Center for fellowship, breakfast, Bible study and prayer.
|
Wonderful Wednesday Following dinner, Adult classes,
beginning at 6:30 p.m., offer a variety of interesting choices.
|
Vacation Bible School is, of course, an opportunity each year for children
to learn and for our church to reach out into the community, and for adults to form
lasting friendships as they work together.
|
Also, consider Our Library. A
volunteer is usually in the Mary Dunlap Sewell Library on Sunday mornings. You are invited to study in the library during the
week and to borrow resources.
